Value-for-money cookbook options

Create My Cookbook is probably the biggest DIY online cookbook system. The editing software is all online and the tutorial when you first login takes you through every step of adding recipes, photos, and designing the book. There are a few set templates you can choose from or start from scratch with a blank template.

From the blank template you can choose 9 layout options for recipe pages, either with or without a photo. You can also add pages with just photos, dedication pages, title pages, dividers, story pages and a few others. As far as customization goes, there seems to be a lot of options, including a number of font styles and sizes, which will be applied to all the recipes in your book.

You can upload images from your computer or connect to Facebook and import photos from there. I can see the Facebook feature being useful to get photos from relatives to include in your cookbook.

You can add multiple contributors to your book so friends and family can directly input their recipes. The recipe box feature keeps track of which recipes you added to your layout, which is pretty handy. Two pretty great features of Create My Cookbook are the We Type It and design services.

For a flat fee, you can upload up to recipes and their team will design your entire cookbook, too. You can calculate a base price before you sign up for a free account. The price depends on how many black and white vs color pages you want to print, so the price will be higher if you have a lot of color photos in your book.

The wire-o options include a softcover version and a hardcover version basically a binder with a permanent wire inside. The wire-o versions lay flat and say the covers are spill-resistant. At first this option confused me since it just looks like a binder you can pick up at any office supply store.

However, you can customize it with a photo and text, which makes it much more homey. It lays flat and is a great option for people who might want to add more recipe pages in the future.

The hardback book option also has a spill-resistant cover, and the quality of the binding looks pretty decent. They are casebound, and casebound books are not attached to the spine of the cover.

So too much use and the contents of your book could come away from the cover. The pages do not lay flat but they look like a nice glossy paper that should hold up fairly well in the kitchen. The E-cookbook is a great option and the price goes down if you order an E-book alongside a printed book.

You can use the E-books online, or as a PDF on your computer, or on their app, and they are searchable. Option to have book typed and designed for you for an additional fee. Best for: Those who only want a few cookbook copies and like a lot of customization options.

Basically how Morsel works is you create an account and just start typing your recipes into their system. You can sort them how you like, and even divide your recipes between different family groups.

The reason I think Morsel is a frontrunner when it comes to online recipes is that its design and usability outdoes anyone else on this list. They have an app.

The platform is subscription based, but if you have a lot of recipes and really need a place to securely store and share them, the price is definitely worth it.

If you are looking for a centralized location for all your recipes that can be shared among all your family members, I think Morsel as on online cookbook maker is your best bet. Can easily segment and share recipes with family and friends.

Best for: Those who want an electronic recipe solution, simple user interface, and want to instantly share their recipes and access them on their phone. Heritage Cookbook is another platform with a number of binding options, the software just lays everything out differently.

You can invite any number of contributors at no extra cost, and the free trial is kind of a great way to impose a deadline on all your family members to get them to upload their recipes as soon as possible. Or you can upload your own design.

The first steps they walk you through have you choose a few style options that are universally applied to your book, like justification and line styles. You also have to option to add an index, which is a great feature if you are building a large cookbook.

The recipes tab in the design center has a number of predetermined categories you can list your recipes under, or you can make your own. When adding a recipe, you can choose from 3 layout designs, with or without a photo. They have 17 stock photo categories and a LOT to choose from within each category.

You can only add one photo to a page but their FAQ section gives some tips on how to get around this , and the software automatically sorts recipes to save page space.

You organize your recipes by the sections you want appetizers, main dishes, desserts, etc. and the recipes are sorted within those sections by length, then alphabetically. It might irk those who want their recipes in a very specific order. The soft cover holds up to pages and hard cover up to pages are both 7x10, and from what I can see in the photos look pretty nice.

Also great for families who need a deadline get the book done before your day trial is up! Those who are ordering books for the whole family the minimum book order is 4 copies.

Cookbook Create is a cookbook designer but also a foodie social media platform. You can upload a profile picture that the rest of the community will see, and make the recipes you upload public. I think the main draw of this site is the fact that you can make a cookbook with your own recipes, but you can also search the thousands of recipes uploaded by other users and include them in your book as well.

You organize your recipes into chapters, and the software automatically creates a table of contents for your first page. You can choose from a few themes with cover photos or you can upload your own photo for the cover.

There are three cover layout options and 12 font styles to choose from for the entire book. When you are ready to add recipes to your chapters, the software keeps track of which recipes are in what chapters, which is great for organization and avoiding duplicates. On the recipe pages in the book, you can add a photo, though it can only be cropped to one horizontal size, which might affect what photos you can use.

But next to each recipe is a dedicated photo page where you can upload one large photo, or change the layout to four photo boxes, which can also be changed to text boxes.

So you can have two photos and two text notes on that page. You can also make the entire page a text page to add a story or cooking notes. Once you are ready to order, you choose your book format at the end and the price calculator does its work. Search community of thousands of recipes to use in your book.

Best for: Individuals who want a nice, easy, minimalist platform to make a cookbook. For those who want to add more recipes than just their own to their books and who want to share recipes with an online community.

It looks like it was built in the early s and never updated, but it works and is somewhat easy to navigate. There are 2 membership options, personal free premium free 30 day trial.

What I like about their recipe uploader is that you can add a special symbol next to each recipe, flagging it as heart healthy, kid friendly, kosher, etc. Please review the articles above to help determine values.

Where to Sell Your Cookbooks This is one of the top questions we receive. Sell to Book Dealers You need to look at your collection in its entirety for the numbers to climb.

Book dealers don't usually pay more than a couple dollars max if not cents per book. If you have something rare--you can better sell it online, on your own. You will earn more. It's comparable to going to a car dealer for a trade-in or selling the car yourself. The direct route will get you a lot closer to market value.

If you are on the brink of throwing out or donating the books, and earning market value is not your key goal, then taking your collection to a local used bookstore may be your best bet.

They will often trade you for store credit. Sell as a "Lot" on eBay If you are trying to earn some quick cash, but want a bit more out of your investment, we recommend selling the collection as a set or "lot" on eBay. The eBay marketplace in our opinion is the best when you want quick turn and the most for your collectibles.

With a "lot" you can sell all the cookbooks in one listing making it less time consuming for you. Sell for at least 7 days. Sell it at auction and start with the lowest price you would be happy with receiving.

Don't risk giving it away for a under a dollar. Selling as an eBay "lot" is our favorite option for those unfamiliar with their cookbook values. Let the market tell you what your collection is worth! Sell those individually on eBay if you have the time see next option.

Sell Individual Cookbooks on eBay or Amazon This is for those of you who have a comfort level with selling online, understand the value of your individual cookbooks, and have time for a lengthy sales cycle. If all of the above are true this route will get you the most money for your collection.

We recommend eBay vs Amazon if you don't want to be selling for over a month. If you have a lot of time, Amazon works well for books and draws the largest audience.

For quick turn, we prefer eBay. As noted in the "sell as a 'lot'" section above, choose the auction option and start with the lowest price you are willing to accept for each book. If you feel you have a rare find, take it to an expert to get it.

Let a Middleman Sell Your Collection If selling online doesn't appeal to you and you still want to try to get more than a few cents or dollars per cookbook, take your collection to an eBay middleman. Let them sell your collection for you on eBay. You should be able to find a local resource on Yelp or in your local yellow pages.

Katy Perry Is Leaving 'American Idol'. See Ryan Seacrest's Transformation Ahead of 'AI'. Advances are usually paid in installments, so authors will see that money in segments over the lifespan of creating and publishing the book.

But how do you tell if an advance is enough? Advances are usually paid in at least three installments, and up to five or six total; typically about half is paid up front, then a quarter more when the manuscript is submitted, and the rest upon publication.

If the advance negotiated falls short, then you seriously have to consider how much you want or need this book to exist. However, there can be non-monetary reasons to publish a book.

It can make a statement, contribute something to the cultural conversation, and become a calling card of sorts for the author, leading to other opportunities.

So for some, it might be worth the investment from a brand-building and reputational standpoint. How badly should you want to work with a publisher who offers you a paltry advance? Smith advises caution in evaluating offers. For sold cookbooks, royalties are often in the range of 8 percent to 10 percent of the cover price.

The advance the publisher gave the author is an advance against future royalties, so publishers pay themselves back before authors see any money. This brings me back to the idea of working with a publisher directly. It may sound nice to cut out the middleman, but be wary of offers like this.

Some publishers will jump at the chance to work with authors directly, but may offer them a lower deal than what an agent would be able to negotiate. At the end of the day, authors still retain ownership of their book copyright.

This sounds like a lot, especially considering how hard the actual work of writing a cookbook is to begin with. dollars in your pocket.

I do see that you have a free PDF, which I can tell our participants about, but the physical copy would be much more usable for them. Thanks for any leads you can give. And thanks for doing this book. Holy cow, it is a great thing. Hi Terese, Happy to connect you with our distribution partner.

Please email me at leanne leannebrown. Great book. Thanks so much for giving back. I notice your book was missing from the SNAP website; how can we Help? Your book was so wonderful that I ordered one for myself. That one would be given to someone else that needed it was astonishing.

You seem to be the most selfless, giving person. God bless you. Thank you Kim, that is very kind. I would love to give my older fixed-income mom a copy of this! Are there any plans to make a large-print version available?

How did that work with the Spanish translation? Did the translator just supply the text or did they format it as well? Greetings from Germany Johanna. Not quite sure why the internet decided to delete all my paragraph breaks in that comment, sorry about that!

And all cheap of course, and good too, and easy for kids to make to help out. Heaven knows how many future RDs you might inspire.

Hi Janey, I have definitely thought about it! Why does the Spanish version have twice as many pages as the English version? Also will part to be available in pff soon?

Thank you for thinking of this and your wonderful generosity. Hi Marguerite, the Spanish version has all the new recipes that the 2nd edition has, while the English is still the first edition.

Hopefully I will be able to release the 2nd edition in English at some point too! I am excited to find this resource and start using it myself.

I run a free food bank and would like to advertise your cookbook to my clients. Do you have a poster or flyers that I can print or that are available to post in the food bank?

I think this would be a valuable resource for my clients who are on limited incomes and receive SNAP. both in English and Spanish.

I was wondering whether you would consider creating a compilation of crowd pleasing recipes that can be prepared at low cost for large groups? I imagine that plenty of organizations from soup kitchens to campus groups with tight budgets would love your help with healthy, low cost dishes that can be combined into a meal that would hold up well on a serving line.

Your new book is probably a good idea for my husband and I. We live on disability, and he had a massive heart attack last Sunday. We need to eat better and save some money, too! I heard you talking to Jonathan Green on Radio National a few Saturdays ago.

Amazing how he could conjure up such taste with so few ingredients. Anyway, Amazon. au had your book and I bought a copy.
