As an adult you get to discern what those beliefs and perceptions are, and which ones serve you well, and which ones you want to let go of now. Looking after myself matters. I can work in a balanced way that means I am well, and I am doing well.

These new beliefs simply start to change how you work. They change how you support your friends, family and community — ideally and primarily by helping you check in with yourself first before you say Yes. You know all that looking after others you do? The bringing home the bacon via a hour week, the ferrying the kids to every after-school activity known to man, the caring for your elderly parent or aunt, the PTA, those three boards you are on, and the fifteen other things not listed here.

And from there, with great love and compassion, you will see that love is not just for other people. It is for you too. It means putting you on the list for a start, and at the top — not because that helps you bring a better version of yourself to others, which it invariably does — but because your right as a human being is to be healthy and happy.

You, you as you are in this very moment, doing this one thing, reading these words, are enough. People feel the energy you bring to every situation.

If you are happy, they will observe that. If you are angry, they will feel that, too. Your emotions don't even have to be that extreme for your loved ones to absorb this energy.

So recognize that power, subtle as it may be at times. If you are standing alone in your kitchen and your best friend or a family member walks in, they will pick up on what kind of mood you are in instantly.

It's becoming normal to see children testing high in cortisol levels just barely into their teens because they have absorbed the stress of their well-meaning parents. The best thing you can do for your loved ones is to be the healthiest and happiest self you can be.

I wanted to please my boss and make sure that I embodied what it meant to be a hard worker. This resulted in me staying later hours and sacrificing a social life for the first few years of my career. And like clockwork, I started to resent work and would say yes when all I really wanted to say was no.

When it comes to pleasing people in our lives, we tend to be most concerned about pleasing those closest to us. In high school, I had no concept of what it meant to set boundaries in a relationship, and my boyfriend at the time knew it. He would ask me to grab him lunch or do his homework because he was too busy and it would really help him out.

As a naïve teenage girl obsessed with the idea of love, I did whatever he asked of me. And this often resulted in my dropping the ball on my own assignments or losing friendships.

I now look back on my actions at that time and want to gag. Set boundaries in your relationships so that they can last long-term and make both parties happy. And in some cases, this rushing around and keeping yourself busy is a way to distract yourself from your genuine feelings and a deeper issue.
