Walmart is well-known for having some of the lowest prices of any national retail chain. In this analysis of the cheapest online grocery delivery operations, its budget-friendly reputation held up.

Many of Walmart's cheapest items come courtesy of its in-house brand, Great Value. To find the cost of buying groceries online at these three retailers, I first generated a list of 37 popular grocery items -- some name brands, some generic -- on the same day and in every grocery category including bread, snacks, dairy, produce, meat, fish, beverages and pantry staples.

I mostly avoided specialty items and organic ingredients for this exercise. For each product, I chose the cheapest available option from all three retailers: Amazon Fresh, Target and Walmart. If an item wasn't available at one retailer, I selected the next closest thing, since that's what a shopper would likely do.

In some cases, a product was only available in a larger or smaller size. In those instances, I prorated the amount and price to ensure it was an even cost comparison. While there are other places to order groceries online , Amazon Fresh, Target via Shipt and Walmart are three of the most popular US grocers with a national presence and the option for online delivery.

You'll also get Amazon Prime Video and a few other perks. As of Feb. All three offer free in-store pickup in some form, although Amazon has fewer locations than Walmart and Target. Target-owned Shipt will send groceries to your door in a matter of hours but there are some staples, including meat, not available for delivery.

While I tried to use only items that were available for delivery, it wasn't always possible. Target and its national shipping partner Shipt don't have every grocery staple available for shipping, particularly fresh meats and some produce. If you want to shop for your full list of groceries at Target, you're likely going to have to visit a brick-and-mortar location.

In general, Walmart and Target offer the same prices online as they do in brick-and-mortar locations, but not always. Sales items, in particular, are not always coordinated between online and in-store. Amazon Fresh is mostly online-only save for a few locations, although many products on Amazon Fresh can also be found at Whole Foods.

Hungryroot is a cross between a grocery delivery service and meal kit company and encourages you to go rogue from the recipe. Instacart is a popular national delivery service and functions as a third-party shopper and delivery outfit that allows you to order groceries from a selection of local supermarkets.

Fresh Direct is another popular grocery delivery service and one of my favorites. It's currently only available in the Northeast. The prices here are a bit higher than the three retailers I analyzed above, but the grocery selection and customer service are both excellent.

Hungryroot is a quirky grocery delivery operation that functions differently than the others. With a subscription, you'll get weekly deliveries of curated groceries based on your preferences and eating habits.

The price shift is most visible when you're making your weekly trip to the supermarket. However, not all stores were created equal. Minimizing your grocery bill starts by picking the stores with the lowest possible prices.

We've rounded up the top six low-cost grocery stores in the United States, from regionally specific chains to nationwide and even international brands.

These stores have everything you may need for your grocery haul without the massive price tag. If you haven't shopped at Aldi yet, you're missing out on some of the cheapest groceries around. According to YouGov , a market research and data analytics firm, Aldi is considered one of the most popular grocery stores in the country.

Not only is the product quality top-tier, the German-based company's business model is designed to minimize the cost to the consumer. According to Aldi , 90 percent of the products on their shelves are private-label brands. Other things, like the 25 cent returnable deposit to use the shopping carts, bagging your own groceries, and not listening to licensed music on the overhead speakers, decrease the store's overhead costs, which helps keep prices low.

And selecting produce out of the crates they came in rather than from aesthetically stacked displays is a small price to pay for cheap groceries.

This four-letter German company also operates on a low-cost model, but it's not the same as Aldi. Lidl has been offering affordable groceries since the s and is actively expanding across the East Coast of the U. Although there are fewer locations than Aldi, they're constantly in close competition for stocking the cheapest groceries.

The selection of items is curated to keep the essentials in stock, instead of the added expense of keeping every variety and brand on the shelf. Their private label brands also have a Love It Guarantee , which means if a product doesn't meet your standards you can get your money back and exchange the item for something else.

This big-box store has all of the appeal of members-only clubs like Costco or Sam's Club , but without the expensive fees. WinCo Foods boasts locations across the West Coast, and is almost entirely employee-owned—which means their staff receive better wages and benefits.

And yet the prices are still low. WinCo purchases directly from farmers and manufacturers and has a large quantity of bulk foods, which means their prices undercut many other low-cost retailers. Another way to cut costs is by not accepting credit cards for payment.

But fear not: they do allow payment with debit cards and federal food assistance cards. Market Basket is one of the smaller chains on this list, but their savings make it one of the most affordable places to shop in the U.

A recent study provided by the customer data firm dunnhumby revealed that the New England-based chain was the "top grocery retailer for inflationary times. For over years, Market Basket has maintained the fierce loyalty of their customers for the high quality food at low prices.

You can find anything from international cheeses, freshly squeezed juices, to even handmade sushi without racking up a massive grocery bill. Trader Joe's is one of our go-to spots for affordable essentials, some of the best frozen food around, and unique snacks.

In the end, Walmart nabbed the top spot as the cheapest place to buy groceries online. They come in microwavable containers and they can be refrigerated at home and eaten within two days according to Darryl, our local Wegmans deli guy who is worth his weight in gold.

We used this option for the insanity that followed our last baby when I came down with an infection and was bed ridden even more so for a few days. You can pick up 4 meals at a time, and eat them for dinner for two days.

You can pick up a container of lunch meat or peanut butter and jelly and bread for sandwiches with baby carrots and chips at Lunch, and milk and cereal for breakfast.

Drink water at home and pair it with anything found in your house: yogurt, chips, ice cream, raisins and peanuts, or anything you can find.

Peppers, mushrooms and onions develop a perfect char without being burnt. I will never try grilling veggies without this again. The size is perfect for hungry adults.

Clean up is easy, and after several uses it has begun to develop a nice patina and shows no signs of warping. I can confidently say that this has been the most meaningful upgrade to my grilling, ever!

My only regret is that I did not purchase one of these years ago. I wanted real stainless steel not chrome and heavy weight. Size is large enough to cook for 4 with room to properly stir, heavy enough to prevent warping.

Shape: Grill baskets come in a variety of shapes. We found that wok-style baskets with handles work best for stir-frying, while the tray-shaped baskets perform better for fish.

Materials: Stainless steel grill baskets offer a balance of good searing and easy cleaning, but you may prefer a nonstick or cast iron grill basket depending on your priorities.

Nonstick grill baskets are the easiest to clean, but don't sear as well. Cast iron, on the other hand, sears excellently, but is often the heaviest and hardest to clean. Design: Simple is usually better when it comes to grill baskets.

In our testing, baskets with tops often called fish baskets were unwieldy to use. We prefer open-topped baskets that allow you to simply flip or toss your food with a spatula or tongs. To find the best grill baskets, we tested 12 models. I have years of experience as a professional chef and cooking instructor.

In addition to leaning on my own expertise, I invited two local caterers and some amateur family members to help evaluate the grill baskets. I also reached out to grilling experts for additional insight. Overall, we looked for:. First, we focused on whether the basket was easy to open, set up, use, and lift.

We read the manufacturer's directions and recommendations for any limitations and preheating requirements, and double-checked whether the handles were heatproof.

We tested various grill pans with different shapes, sizes and materials to determine which was the most versatile and user-friendly. The designs included grill trays, wok-style baskets, rectangles, squares and round shapes. To test the baskets, we grilled 1-inch thick filets of cod cooked to degrees Fahrenheit, as well as asparagus, sliced zucchini, and bell peppers.

Our goal was to cook the food properly and evenly, with the expectation of some charring, grill marks, and smoke flavor. When we were finished cooking, we cleaned each grill pan based on the manufacturer's directions, either by hand in the sink or in the dishwasher.

The short answer is yes. If you want to have more variety on your grill, a grill basket is a terrific tool to carefully cook delicate items like fish or small foods that can easily fall through the grill grates like cut vegetables.

When you're done cooking, place the grill basket on a heat-safe surface until it's cool. If your grill basket is dishwasher safe, rinse it off and place it on the top rack on a normal cycle.

The batter comes together quickly, and, like most kids in their first year of life, takes two short naps--one for 10 minutes, to let the oats and milk get to know each other, and a second minute one, just before baking.

This helps ensure the batter will rise nicely. I like using mini muffin tins for this recipe, since I'm serving them to mini-eaters, and also because the increase in surface area results in very cookie-like muffins with a contrasting tender center, but feel free to bake them into 6 full-size muffins.

You can, of course, use muffin liners, but I prefer to use cooking spray or butter, because it helps crisp the sides nicely which we don't normally want for a muffin, but which, for these, works. T he muffin cups go into a super hot oven, which helps their tops puff up immediately, then the temp gets cranked back down to to finish cooking.

When they come out of the oven, let them cool in the pan for just a minute or two. If you used butter or cooking spray in place of the muffin liners, they might need a little help from the sharp edge of a butter knife to loosen them.
