I can drink beer after all. One taste and BLAH! But then something good happened. Other companies began brewing gluten-free beer that actually tasted delish and were completely safe for celiacs.

Life was whole again. End of story, right? I wish. Other companies jumped in and decided to make "gluten-removed" beer. And confusion reigned, which sometimes is the norm in the celiac world.

It basically comes down to profit over people. Gluten-free beer is exactly what it sounds like. Completely celiac safe. Gluten-removed beer, on the other hand, uses a proprietary process where they use gluten containing grains, usually barley, when they brew the beer.

And then they add an enzyme, which theoretically removes enough of the gluten so the final product is below 20 parts per million. And there have been multiple recalls of gluten-removed beer over the years because of wait for it too much gluten.

Which beers are gluten-removed and should be avoided? Good question. There are a handful of other companies that make gluten-reduced beer. Just be real careful to check all labels. The two earliest adopters were Red Bridge and Bards. I appreciate these two opening the doors to the world of gluten-free beer, but if we can be honest, they both taste pretty bad.

I'm sure I am missing a few from this list. another fine question. Because let's be honest, as much as we love gluten-free beer, tons of places still do not carry any but gladly carry gluten-removed beer!

Posted November 1, From personal experience, I know that not all grain alcohol based spirits cannot possibly be completely gluten-free. I became deathly ill after consuming a gin martini zero vermouth after being completely gluten-free for 3 months.

The first thing my co-worker asked me as she was babysitting me in the restaurant's bathroom where I threw up for a solid hour, was if I was on a gluten-free diet. I asked her how she was aware and she said she observed the same thing happen many times before in Hong Kong where our factories were located.

Maker's Mark, but I have yet to experiment and pretty much anything that I don't know all the ingredients and how it is made. If it's source is anything but grapes or other fermented fruits , potatoes, rice, corn, agave, sugar cane I wouldn't take the chance personally.

Posted November 22, I have had problems with grain vodkas. I do not think they are gluten free. Perhaps Scott is correct that the gluten is removed in distillation but perhaps there is grain present at the distillery and that contaminates the final product.
