I nearly always use diluted plain yogurt or sour cream when making biscuits or pancakes. As a general rule, I use about two-thirds yogurt or sour cream and one-third milk.

You just want the consistency to be thin enough without being too runny. In many recipes, dried herbs can be substituted for fresh ones. Use about a third the amount of dried herbs that you would use for fresh i.

one tablespoon dried herbs equals three tablespoons of fresh. I have a brown thumb and tend to kill every plant that dares come through my door, but even I can usually grow herbs at least for a little while.

Growing your own, even if they only live long enough for a few uses, is much cheaper than buying them in bunches or packs at the grocery store.

When making chili, beans and rice, or bean soup , use dried beans instead of canned. When shopping for packaged items, such as bags of apples and oranges, opt for buying bags with more pieces of smaller fruit.

You usually only eat or serve to your kiddo one apple or orange at a time, so a 3-pound bag with twelve smaller apples will last longer than the same weight bag with ten larger ones. Look for ways to prepare side dishes from things like rice, potatoes, carrots , and cabbage.

These foods are cheap and can be prepared a variety of ways. You can also add homemade biscuits , cornbread, or a loaf of French bread to your meal to help make the main dish stretch a little further.

When the kids fix their own tacos, the meat seems to disappear before everyone even makes it through the line. Lemons can be expensive! Bottled juice works just as well in most recipes. My favorite cookbooks use simple, basic ingredients that I usually have on hand.

Be on the lookout for ingredients you can leave out without it having much effect on the finished dish.

Every now and then, challenge yourself to go a little longer than usual between shopping trips. You are so spot on with your advice. I may sound like a mean mom and maybe I am , but I rarely ever make dessert.

I used to make all of our bread. With practice, French bread was quick to make and everyone liked it much more than the store-bought varieties.

If some of your short term plans call for removing to another location on short notice, then the food for that part of your planning needs to be of a type that can be eaten with little preparation or cooking being required.

If safe water will be in short supply, then foods that require a lot of it to prepare them might not be a good idea. The foods that I have chosen all have excellent storage characteristics for the short to medium term, up to about two years.

Detailed information and instructions on storing foods may be found in my Prudent Food Storage FAQ. com or from one of the host sites that also carry it.

The 17 cents change is carried over into the next week. Purchasing the rice and beans first means you have food that can be made edible with no other foods having to be added to them and needing no preparation other than boiling.

If cooking fuel is short, split peas, lentils, and black eyed peas cook quickly. glass 6 qts. Vitamins A, C, and D are the major nutrients typically lacking in most storage foods.

Read the nutritional facts label on the side closely to see what the manufacturer claims it contains. An appalling number of juice products, even some canned citrus juices, claim no vitamin C content at all.

The last purchase is the can of vegetable shortening. Fat is actually a necessary nutritional component even if we do tend to eat too much of it in the present day U.

The shortening allows you to make foods such as biscuits, fry breads, refried beans, pancakes, fried rice and pan breads, and contributes flavor.

In a survival diet, fat is an important source of vital calories. This is an important consideration for small children, pregnant women, the elderly, and the ill who might otherwise have trouble eating enough bulky beans, rice, etc. The 24 cents left over is carried over into the next week.

You now can make bread to give some variety to your rice and bean diet. If you have a grain mill or can acquire one then you may be able to find a local source of whole grains at a reasonable price to supplement or replace the white flour.

The sugar allows you to make sweet breads, puddings from the flour or rice, adds calories, and greatly contributes to taste. Of all the canned vegetables to be had from the grocer the dark green and the orange vegetables give the most nutritional value for the money.

Many of them also include a fair amount of calcium and vitamin C as well. The third ten spot buys you the 64 oz. box of dry milk. The slim remaining penny is carried over into the next week. glass of reconstituted milk.

Unlike fresh liquid milk, the dry powder is shelf stable and can be stored for long periods of time. It may be drunk as straight milk or used to enhance dishes made from the ingredients purchased in the other weeks.

Dry milk can also be used to make excellent yogurt and even non-fat cheese. The remaining 32 cents is added to the surplus from the prior weeks, now totaling 74 cents.

Although the grain, beans, and milk provide all necessary amino acids, most of us will rebel at a purely vegetarian diet, so at least a little meat three or four days out of a week can go a long way towards making matters tolerable.

Other canned meats can be substituted, but as a general rule tuna is leanest and cheapest per ounce. Beware of paying canned meat prices for fillers like pasta, rice, or potatoes. They can be added much more cheaply after the fact rather than buying them already in the can with the meat.

It makes a good baked dish and is very versatile in casseroles, soufflés, puddings, and as either a sweet or savory vegetable.

The 74 cents left over seems trivial but it will buy 2 1-pound cartons of iodized table salt, or yeast to make bread with, or baking soda for leavening and other uses, or a small can of pepper to season food.

The purchasing cycle could be repeated month to month until you reach the amounts you desire, or varied to broaden the selection in your cupboard. If you can afford to use the economies of scale that making larger bulk purchases gives you, then the price per pound of the foods you buy will drop considerably.

If you have the time and resources available to you, much of the fruit and vegetable portion of your storage program can be economically acquired by growing it yourself.

Not only do you get wholesome food, but by putting it up yourself you get exactly what you want in the way that you want it. This is especially true when it comes to food preservation, but you can at least partially offset this by choosing appropriate preservation methods.

Pressure canning requires quite a bit of expensive startup equipment canner, jars, lids, rings, etc. which may make the operation uneconomical. However, if you dry the food instead you can often do this at a much lower cost.

One area of home preservation that generally will be worthwhile to do yourself is canned meats. Beef, pork, and chicken often go on sale and can be had for quite reasonable prices, so even with the price of the jars and equipment necessary to process it, home canned meat will usually be cheaper per pound than any commercially canned meat of equivalent quality.

There are two cardinal rules of successful food storage: The first is store what you eat and eat what you store. The second is to rotate, Rotate, ROTATE! Careful shopping at different places can yield a lot of good buys.

I think if one carries a small pad or notebook they can make a note of foods and the prices at various stores and then you can refer to your notes as to what you can buy and where at the lowest price. Now I have never made notes, but in retrospect maybe I should have as it eliminates scouting trips to check or recheck who had what and how much it was.

I know it sounds sort of like a cliche, but you can find good deals. Clip a few coupons, look for special markdowns and sales and stock up. I have even found inexpensive brands of canned foods with very little sodium. I can buy beans, carrots and small peas that taste good without the harmful excess of salt that some other brands have.

My favorite and least understood ingredient is fish sauce. Smells bad. Tastes strange. But, man, it automatically makes everything taste better. Another ingredient I use all the time is chili garlic sauce. While I like Siracha which is the trendy flavor these days , chili garlic sauce has a little less heat and a little more tang.

Similarly, I always use the cheapest hot sauce I can find. The cheap stuff has more vinegar and fewer peppers than the expensive stuff; I think that gives it a more full flavor.

I miss your spice blogs on Sparkpeople! Like Like. I personally skip the seasoned rice vinegar, since It takes about 5 seconds to season it yourself.

Lessons learned from homemade sushi. And kept repeating it. I did fall in love with the song. Finally, after a month or two, I filled my wallet with enough cash and headed straight to the gourmet store with my jute bag. Picked up the rice noodles, the Sriracha sauce and all the exotic veggies and herbs.

Overlooked my food bill. This much for a single meal? I barged into the kitchen and collected different vessels.

There were many steps involved! Made the base with roasting the onions and spices. Chopped the veggies and seasoned my soup.

I was starving already! I had already drained myself. What might be simple for you, might be difficult for me. And till the time I brought the noodle soup to the table, it was cold.

Who likes cold soups? When I tasted it, I realised there was hardly any salt in it. Rushed back to the kitchen. It involved slurping, and a lot of it! But, after having two bowls of it, and adding a bit of more chilli sauce every time, I was fine.

Taste the dish first at a restaurant to know the actual flavours if you can. And give yourself time to adjust to the new taste when trying something for the first time.

Finally, practice can only make you perfect. Remember that. For next time, I have got some Japanese-style Soba noodles that are made with organic buckwheat flour. Again, Sadia inspired me for this one, too. Pho her, I will. Frankly, I was very reluctant when my husband asked me to try some Lebanese food.

I have never eaten it in my childhood! Yes, as kids, we had pizzas, pastas and Chinese noodles, but not Shawarma. Thanks to this restaurant, Lub Lub Lebanese here in Gurugram run by a Masterchef India contestant , which had rave reviews with the food that was fairly priced too, we went ahead and ordered a Paneer Shawarma.

And, after a few weekends, we ordered a Lebanese platter that changed my thoughts about this cuisine. It was mouth-watering, the platter; everything in it, from the dips to the Paneer Shawarma.

But, where are the recipes? So, weekend after weekend, I started to collect courage to try the entire platter. And last Saturday afternoon, I hit a gourmet store with a huge list of ingredients. Now, I decided to make everything from scratch. And, when I saw the prices of Tahini sauce, Harissa sauce, etc.

I was all the more surprised to see the prices. Just saying. I researched all the recipes from scratch and picked up all the local veggies only.

In fact, I used all the Indian spices that I had with me. You know, this is what I have learnt from my experience. I end up buying all the expensive ingredients and then the bottles and packets go waste in the fridge.

It was almost 5. Yes, it took me almost two hours to make this entire spread, but I did it. Was I happy? Of course! We ate for almost 45 minutes, and then, gave up. There was no space in our tummies for anymore; we had stuffed ourselves so much. Hope you like the recipes; in spite of all the local ingredients in it.

I would ask you guys to subscribe them and spread some love. Soak some chickpeas overnight, and boil them. Add 2 tbsp Tahini sauce, olive oil, two cloves of garlic, 2 tbsp lemon juice and all the spices salt, pepper, cumin powder and red chilli powder.

And your Musabaha as chef Bushra likes people to call it or Hummus is ready. Serve it with a drizzle of olive oil on top with a sprinkle of cumin powder.

By the way, both the ts are silent here, so you actually have to pronounce it as Zaziki. For the Greek yogurt, all you need to do is take a colander or strainer, put a cheesecloth or muslin cloth on it.

You can also use an old but clean white handkerchief. And add two or three cups of fresh curd. Now, twist the cloth and keep it on a deep plate for the excess water to drain off. All right. So, the ingredient list of this specific dip freaked me out.

I felt a feeling of guilt while trying this recipe. I skipped it for this dip, but I can do this recipe for later surely. For this recipe, add a roasted red bell pepper deseeded in a grinding jar with a handful of walnuts, 2 tbsp Tahini sauce, 1 toast of bread, and a drizzle of olive oil.

Grind it to a paste. Now, add 1 tbsp of water I used it for a smoother texture , and season it with some salt and red chilli powder.

In a grinding jar, add two cups of boiled beans, 1 cup chopped coriander leaves, 2 to 3 chopped green onions optional , 5 cloves of garlic. Blend it, but mind my tip-off. I grinded it so much so that it became a runny thin paste.

Add water only to blend it all. You want to make a thick paste for the Falafel tikkis or balls. I had to use huge amounts bread crumbs to make it thick. HuffPost Personal. For Our Partners Moving The Dream Forward.
